Ph.D. (2014) Star Experiences or Gymnasium Aesthetics – A Study of Quality Perceptions in School Concert Practices. In the study, Holdhus worked with communication processes between musicians, teachers and students in visiting concert practices at schools.
From 2017 to 2020, Kari was the project manager in the innovation project School and Concert - from dissemination to dialogue (DiSko). The project's goal was to develop alternative forms of artist visits in schools by emphasizing dialogical encounters between musicians, teachers and students and to offer opportunities for creativity, participation and ownership. Currently, Holdhus is engaged in the research project Music teacher education for the future (FUTURED 2019-2022), which explores the potential for development and change in Norwegian music teacher education. Holdhus was the leader of the Nordic Network for Music Education Research 2020-2023. She is a member of the editorial board of the Nordic Journal of Art and Research
