Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

The content of the area of children's development, play and learning is structured according to the following main themes:

  • The kindergarten as an educational arena
  • The kindergarten as an arena for care, play, learning and development
  • Views on children and childhood
  • Critical reflection
  • Observation and educational documentation
  • Educational leadership in children's groups
  • The kindergarten's physical space and materials

Consistent themes for all the areas of knowledge in the course of study are:

  • Educational management
  • Diversity and equality
  • The youngest children
  • The child's involvement
  • Didactics

Practice in the area of knowledge 10 days autumn

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

After completing the subject, the student will have:

  • Knowledge of relevant theories and research about children's development, play, learning, care and education
  • Knowledge about play as a phenomenon of childhood and as an arena for learning, friendship and contact between children and the adult role in play
  • Knowledge about observation and educational documentation as a basis for didactic facilitation of play and learning processes and play and learning environments in the kindergarten
  • Initial knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods with the emphasis on observation

Skills:

After completing the subject, the student will:

  • Be able to meet children with a appreciative demeanour and enter into caring relations with every child
  • Be able to recognise the experimenting and exploring child and contribute to further development
  • Be able to be a positive role model in play and learning in various situations in the kindergarten
  • Be able to lead educating processes in a group of children based on the children's circumstances and interests
  • Be able to create and make use of observation guides in the work of collecting information
  • Be able to create a summary of kindergarten-related material and present this in writing and verbally

 

General competence:

After completing the subject, the student will:

  • Be able to express a professional opinion and use academic competence in practical and theoretical issues
  • Be able to display ethical and professional insight through reflection on children's integrity, based on understanding of democracy, equality and equal opportunity
  • Be able to communicate and develop his or her own competence in educational work with children
  • Be able to search for and work with academic literature

Entry requirements

- None

Teaching methods

Lectures, internet-based tuition, dialogue and reflection in class/groups, group work, excursions and presentation of student work.

Compulsory learning activities

80 % participation in teaching (practical, theoretical and internet-based)

Mandatory tasks

Pre and post work in practice (examination practice)

Assessment

- Oral examination: 30 minutes

- Practices are assessed as Passed or Failed
