Course description for academic year 2017/2018
Contents and structure
The programme is intended to give students experience of practical and aesthetic working methods and learning processes and enable them to lead such processes in the kindergarten.
The area f knowledge emphasises aesthetic perception, experience, reflection, communication and expression through various sensory media including digital media. A central aspect of the area of knowledge is to qualify students to work with the child's encounter with a diversity of artistic and cultural expressions. Development of the student's aesthetic perception, practical skills and creative abilities is key, as is the ability to reflect on aesthetic expressions and cultural values. The area of knowledge also provides insight into how the kindergarten can communicate a diversity of cultural traditions, including the traditions of indigenous people, and aesthetic perception, facilitate creativity and inspire children in their play, learning and creative activities.
Focus area
The focus area will be creative activity both in the kindergarten and outside in natural surroundings, using play, curiosity and exploration, creativity and improvisation. Aesthetic experiences and creative activities will be a central theme in an inter-disciplinary project in this area of knowledge.
The teaching will identify an educational approach and didactic research related to the area of knowledge, in which practice is an integral part.

The content and tasks of practice must be in line with the learning outcome of the area of knowledge.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
After completing the subject, the student will have:
- Knowledge about how the subjects in the area of knowledge contribute to children's different perceptions and forms of expression and learning.
- Knowledge of art, culture, aesthetics, creativity and creative processes
- Knowledge about children's culture, cultural heritage in a multi-cultural perspective, Sami culture and knowledge of how culture affects children's different forms of expression.
- Knowledge of children's development within the aesthetic subject areas
- Knowledge of how children develop aesthetic competence through different sensory media, play and exploratory activities.
- Knowledge of educational theory and children's many methods of expression within the aesthetic subject areas
- Initial knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods with the emphasis on observation
Skills:
After completing the subject, the student will:
Be able to plan, implement, document and evaluate artistic and art educational processes with and for children
- Be able to organise and create environments that invite children to aesthetic perception, curiosity, exploration, joy in creating and play.
- Be able to organise and facilitate aesthetic activities that promote curiosity and creativity
- Be able to use various forms of instruments, sensory media, equipment, techniques and materials and to explore these in interaction with children in formal and informal situations
- Be able to use his or her professionalism for improvisation in play and learning
- Be able to organise an inclusive, diverse and stimulating cultural fellowship in which reading aloud, discussion and other forms of aesthetic expression have their place.
- Be able to create and make use of observation guides in the work of collecting information
- Be able to create a summary of scientific articles and reflect on these
General competence:
After completing the subject, the student will
- Be able to see and listen to children as competent participants who can contribute to the kindergarten's work involving art, culture and creativity
- Have a conscious attitude to, sensitivity to and insight into children's different forms of aesthetic expression and be able to contribute to children's gaining an understanding of each other's cultural backgrounds.
Be able to understand the significance of the kindergarten teacher as co-creator, participant and role model in children's exploration and expression, and know the significance of and be able to stimulate children's joy in creating and feelings of achievement
- Be able to have a conscious attitude to gender perspective and the multi-cultural perspective and be able to use this in cultural communication and creative activities
- Be able to understand development work and research in the aesthetic area as a prerequisite for strengthening the artistic and cultural work in the kindergarten
- Be able to search for and work with academic literature

Teaching methods
The programme is organised with varied forms of work, with the emphasis on practical and aesthetic working methods. The students' own creative and performance work is key, in the form of individual tasks, individual study and inter-disciplinary group projects. The use of digital media is key to the learning process. Theory is linked to themes and working methods and didactics and will be presented in the form of lectures, internet-based tuition, group work, excursions and through individual study.
