ING2055 Signals and Systems

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

Course description: Basic understanding of linear systems, both for continuous and discrete time. This is an important tool for understanding physical systems, in addition to processing various kinds of measuring signals. Computing tools (Matlab) is used actively throughout the course to work with signals and analyze systems.

Course content: Basic concepts of discrete and continuous time signals and systems (incl. linearity, time invariance, causality and stability). Convolution (folding), difference and differential equations, impulse response, transforms (Fourier-, Z- and Laplace transform), frequency analysis, transfer functions and frequency response.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge: Understands and is able to communicate the connection between time continuous and time discrete signals and what role time discrete signal processing plays in conditioning time continuous signals. Is able to argument for and convey the main issues of the subject, first and foremost the relation between the signal in to linear time invariant systems and the system's response.

Skills:Is able to use mathematical methodes, both in the time and in the transform domain for calculating relations between input and response for linear time invariant systems. Is able to use MATLAB for simple signal processing.

General qualification: After finishing this course the student has achieved the fundamental understanding of basic signal and system theory.
