NAB2013 Safety Management

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

This course handles some of the key conventions related to the sea. Common for all is that these conventions implement regulations securing seamen's working conditions, prevents pollution and prevents situations where fatalities and loss of property easily can be the outcome. These conventions are legally binding for all parties, and through common and uniform regualtions control and inspection regiments and maritime commercial interests are facilitated. The leadershipaspect is visualized through mamagement of the legislation, both from authorities and for the obligated party. The course also contains key theories within safety management related to the ISM Code. General techniques for risk management and risk assessment will be handled.

Learning Outcome

- Knowledge:

The students should be familiar with key IMO and ILO conventions. They should understand how Norway can influence the content of such conventions, how we are committed and which role we as a flag state and a coastal state play in the regime which these international conventions add up to. The students have to understand EU's role as supranational and authority executive body. They should be familiar with different approaches to practical safety management and risk assessment.

- Skills:

The students should be able to interpret the regulations and use it on current issues. This implies interpreting and understanding certain provisions, and also be able to use the content of such on specific issues. The students should be able to carry out systematic safety management, identify risk and implement appropriate measures. They should also be familiar with which certification and documentation should be onboard in accordance with international conventions, how these are obtained and period of validity.

- General Qualifications:

Through exercises and training, the students should be able to use the theoretical knowledge in practical situations. They should be able to relate to the international rule regime independent of whether they are onboard a ship, in the shipping organizations or as a representative for the authorities.

Lectures, performances and group work.

Assessment

The Home Exam shall be completed in groups.

Written Exam shall be completed individually.
