PSYK6103 Development and Practice of Mental Health Work: Communication, Cooperation and Conflict Management

Course description for academic year 2017/2018

Contents and structure

The course centers on knowledge of communication and different therapeutical approaches, the development of skills in communication and interaction, and the premises and significance of relations in mental health work. Special emphasis will be given to enhancement of competence and the ability to cope with challanges regarding the relation care worker-user in terms of health promotion, coping and empowerment. The student is encouraged to interact with users, practising awareness and reflection regarding one¿s own comfort zone and that of the user.

Learning Outcome

·         has advanced knowledge of therapeutical communication and interaction, focusing on coping and empowerment

·         has advanced knowledge of the significance of relations and context in promoting mental health

·         has advanced knowledge of forms of cooperation in interdisciplinary and interdepartmental interaction

 

·         is able to employ current legislation in clinical situations

·         is able to employ and master conversation as a therapeutical approach

·         is able to systemise, document and impart the needs and experiences of the user and present them to different decisive authorities

·         is able to strenghten neworks and milieus through work with the mentally ill and their families

·         is able to employ ethical models in analysing ethical dilemmas in connection with the mentally ill and their families

·         is able to employ professionally justifiable methods promoting coping and empowerment

·         is able to prompt and enhance interdisciplinary and interdepartmental interaction

·         is able to establish and maintain relations based on respect, empathy and understanding

 

·         is able to impart, discuss and analyse professional problems in collaboration with the user and other occupational groups

is able to promote the user¿s perspectives as well as using them as a starting point in professional evaluations
