GE406 Introduction to Geology

Course description for academic year 2019/2020

Contents and structure

The course provides an introduction to important geological concepts:

  • The interior of the Earth
  • Plate tectonics
  • The formation of minerals and rocks
  • Inner processes: Intrusive activity, metamorphism, crustal deformation
  • Outer processes: Weathering, erosion, mass wasting, transport and deposition of sediments and the formation of sedimentary rocks
  • Various geological landforms
  • Overview of the geology of Norway
  • Practical exercises working with various minerals, rocks, soil samples and geological maps

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

  • Students will develop an understanding of the most important geological processes within the Earth
  • Students will have knowledge of various geological processes responsible for shaping and modifying the Earth's surface

Skills

  • Students will be able to identify approximately 25 different minerals and 30 different rock types.
  • Students will be able to describe sediment samples and identify likely depositional processes.
  • Students will know how to interpret topographic- and geological maps.

General qualifications

Students will obtain a thorough understanding of geological processes and be able to apply their knowledge and skills to interpret geological structures and landforms.

Entry requirements

Teaching methods

Lectures, practical exercises and mandatory excursions.

Compulsory learning activities

Mandatory excursions.

Mandatory assignments (8/10).

Assessment

Written exam in two parts. Each part of the exam must be passed in order to complete the course. If you fail one of the two parts, only the failed part will have to be re-examined.

First part: Written practical exam (2 x 45 minutes) with identification of minerals, rocks and soil samples as well as interpretation of geological maps. 30% weight towards final grade.

Second part: Written theoretical exam (4 hours, digital). 70% weight towards final grade.

Grading: A - F.
