PL412 Human intervention on landscapes

Contents and structure

Evaluation of landscape consequences of different landscape encroachments. Ecological, visual and social consequences at different scales are discussed. Types of encroachments assessed are the development of hydropower, wind power, road construction and large recreational sites (e.g. mountain cabins and alpine skiing facilities). Introduction to consequence analysis based on the Norwegian Planning and Building Act. Identification of visual and ecological vulnerable landscapes and nature types. The students will carry out a project assignment including the visual and ecological consequences of landscape development. The assignment will include landscape analysis at different scales and grading terrain in a detailed plan.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

• Understanding the consequences of different types of landscape encroachments, and how they differ between different types of landscapes.

Skills:

• Ability to grade terrain and visualize terrain alterations by basic map drawing.

Competence:

• Being able to explain ecological and visual consequences of different large landscape encroachments.

Group assignment in selected theme, vary between years

Group assignment with oral presentation in landscape ecology and written Group assignment

Assessment

Exam part 1:  Group assignment (3-5 students) (60% weight).

Exam part 2: Multiple Choice Exam (40% weight).

New group assignment must be performed if getting a failing grade.

Grading A-F.
