ENG3-1009 Linguistics 1: English Grammar and Phonetics
Course description for academic year 2019/2020
Contents and structure
Linguistics consists of two parts: grammar and phonetics.
In grammar, special attention will be given to word classes, syntax, and the verbal system. The students will be taught how to analyse English on several different levels (word, phrase, clause). The course builds on the recognition that English and Norwegian differ in some areas and are alike in others. Translation can be used to illustrate differences in grammar.
In phonetics, special attention will be given to speech production and the English consonant/vowel inventory. The students will be given an introduction to English phonetics from a comparative perspective so that they are able to recognize and correct pronunciation mistakes made by Norwegian learners of English. The students will also be taught how to transcribe words and/or simple sentences.
