Contents and structure
The course gives a basic introduction to mathematics: functions of one variable, differential and integral calculus, maxima and minima, exponential, logarithmic and polynomial functions, trigonometry and vector calculations, linear equations, functions of two variables and an introduction to differential equations and finite difference methods.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge
Students know about:
- functions of one variable
- exponential, logarithmic and polynomial functions
- trigonometry and vector calculations
- differential and integral calculus
- functions of several variables
- limit values of simple functions
- basic differential equations
- finite difference methods
Skills
Students can:
- execute algebraic manipulation of equations containing powers, fractions, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions
- use differential calculus to calculate local and global maximums and minimums of a function
- use integral calculus to calculate the sum contributions of a function and volumes of revolution and solve simple differential equations
General competence
- After having passed this module, the students will be familiar with mathematical concepts and methods which will be applied to solve practical problems later in their studies.
Entry requirements
The subject builds upon R1 / (S1+S2) from highschool.
Teaching methods
Lectures and problem solving.
Compulsory learning activities
One written assignment.
The work requirement must be completed by a set deadline.
Assessment
Written examination under supervision, 4 hours. Grading A-F
