SYKF200 Nursing within Acute, Chronical and Critical Disease

Contents and structure

This module covers the nursing of acutely, chronically and critically ill patients with medical, surgical and/or mental illnesses. This module forms a theoretical basis for knowledge and understanding of health challenges and courses of treatment, with a special focus on the restorative, rehabilitative and palliative functions of nursing.

This module also covers the following topics:

• sociological perspectives of illness, inequality in health and in health services, roles and power
• relevant legislation and public documents
• organisation and management
• risk factors, information security and quality indicators
• interprofessional collaboration
• courses of treatment (patient treatment courses)
• Developmental psychology - the normal development of children and young people and their specific needs
• children and young people in hospital
• relatives - children as relatives
• nursing in brief interactions
• Pre-, peri,- and postoperative nursing

Upon module completion, students will have attained the following total learning outcomes, divided into knowledge, skills and general competence.

Compulsory learning activities

The following compulsory learning activities must be completed before students can sit the final examination:

1: Participation in study groups with peer feedback and supervision. Topic: sociological perspectives.

2: Participation in study groups with peer feedback and supervision. Topic: acute/critical illness.

3: Participation in study groups with peer feedback and supervision. Topic: chronic illness.

4: Participation in study groups with peer feedback and supervision. Topic: mental health disorders/illness.

5: Participation in study groups with peer feedback and supervision. Topic: palliative care.

6: One piece of written individual work, up to 1500 words

Compulsory learning activities are valid for four semesters. In the case of absence from cumpulsory learning activities, the same rules apply as for absence during practical training according to the regulations relating to programmes of study and examinations at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Assessment

Individual written exam, 5 hours.

The time and place of the examination will be published on Studentweb.

Assessment grading

Graded using a scale from A to F, where A to E are passing grades and F is a fail.

New exam: 

Resit exams are conducted in the same way as ordinary exams.
