Course description for academic year 2025/2026

Contents and structure

In the Internship course, students will gain insight and knowledge about the daily operations in service or tourism enterprises at an administrative level. Through authentic work tasks, reflection, and guidance, students will acquire an understanding of methods, issues, processes, and tools in the workplace related to the enterprise or organization. The course aims to help students reflect on the theory they have acquired during the previous semesters and any key issues in the industry.

The course will enable students to apply the theory from the first three semesters to develop knowledge, skills, and general competence in tourism, marketing, and management in an interdisciplinary and holistic manner. Through practical experience, students will apply theory in real work environments, providing them with valuable insights and skills necessary for a career in tourism. Students will work in a company or organization for up to 450 hours. Students can choose to do their internship in Norway or abroad.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

The student will:

  • Have broad knowledge of key issues, topics, theories, methods, and tools in the operation, development, and management of tourism businesses.
  • Acquire knowledge about research and development work in the operation, development, marketing, and management of tourism businesses.
  • Acquire knowledge about the history, traditions, uniqueness, and role of the tourism industry in society.
  • Acquire knowledge about the use of theory and method through practical application in a company or organization.
  • Acquire knowledge about the practical operation of a tourism business or tourism organization.
  • Acquire knowledge about the relationship between different subjects in the study and how these are used in a company or organization.
  • Within the chosen field, acquire knowledge about key topics, issues, processes, tools, and methods in use.

Skills

The student will be able to:

  • Apply academic knowledge and theory to practical issues and solve them in the best possible way.
  • Apply academic knowledge and relevant results from research and development work to practical and theoretical issues and make well-founded decisions.
  • Reflect on their own academic performance and adjust it according to guidance.
  • Find, evaluate, and refer to information and academic material that addresses and solves issues in the general operation, development, and management of a tourism business.
  • Master relevant tools, techniques, and forms of expression in the operation, development, and management of a tourism business.
  • Be able to perform tasks within the chosen internship area.

General Competence

The student has:

  • Insight into the requirements and guidelines in the workplace.
  • The ability to ask academic questions that can contribute to the further development of the company or organization.
  • The ability to communicate and collaborate with involved parties inside and outside the organization.
  • The ability to see the interdisciplinary whole around tourism, marketing, and management and use this competence for the benefit of the company, organization, and society as a whole.
  • Recognized the importance of and been inspired to stay professionally updated.
  • The ability to plan and solve academic tasks independently.
  • Knowledge of innovation and innovation processes.
  • Knowledge of and can convey central academic material such as theories, issues, and solutions.
  • Insight into relevant professional and ethical issues.

Compulsory learning activities

Requirement 1: Mandatory participation in an internship in a company or organization for up to 150 hours and a reflection note. The exact number of hours will be determined by the course coordinator.

Requirement 4: Participation in a seminar with an oral presentation.

Assessment

Individual portfolio exam with four parts that include a practice report.

The four parts are described as the four reflection notes in the course requirements.

Grade: Pass or Fail.
