David Richards er en erfaren sykepleier og helsetjenesteforsker. Han er forfatter av mer enn 290 fagfellevurderte og fagtidsskriftartikler, bøker og bokkapitler. Han er felles redaktør av boken 'Complex Interventions in Health', og har oppnådd mer enn £ 14m (167mNOK) i ekstern forskningsfinansiering i løpet av karrieren. Han forsker på komplekse helsetjenester, inkludert systematiske gjennomganger, pilot- og gjennomførbarhetsforsøk, kliniske studier i full skala og studier med blandet metode som integrerer eksperimentelt avledede resultatdata med funn fra observasjonskvalitative studier.
David er emeritus Seniorforsker ved Storbritannias National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) fakultet. Han har vært i forkant av nasjonale og internasjonale anstrengelser for å forbedre tilgangen til behandling for de som lider av psykologiske helseproblemer med høy forekomst som depresjon, og har ledet utviklingen av behandlingsmetoder med lav intensitet. Han var klinisk informatikkrådgiver for UK Department of Health fra 2008-2011. Han har også jobbet og publisert mye på bevisbasen for grunnleggende sykepleie. Inntil nylig var han president for European Academy of Nursing Science og leder for sykepleie ved University of Exeter, Storbritannia.
Mellom 2020-2022 var han sjefsetterforsker for det NIHR-finansierte «COVID-NURSE»-klyngen randomiserte kontrollerte kliniske forsøk, som evaluerte en pandemispesifikk klinisk sykepleieprotokoll brukt av sykepleiere som tar seg av pasienter innlagt på sykehus med COVID-19.
