Joel has a PhD in the dual areas of Cybersecurity and Data Mining. He has a teaching career going back to 2004 across a wide range of IT subject areas. He has taught beginner through to expert levels of programming, web design, database development, web services and software design methodologies. However, Joel’s primary teaching area for the past ten years has been cybersecurity, focusing on cryptography, penetration testing, risk analysis and eforensics.
Joel heads up Maritime Cybersecurity at HVL in both teaching and research. He is involved with the HUMANE and MariMOOC research projects and teaching the Bachelor of Maritime Management.
He is also an active researcher in the areas of supply chain security, serious games for health, and child exploitation prevention. He currently supervises four PhD students and also works at University of Tasmania in Australia.
