Mette disputerte for ph.d graden våren 2017 med avhandlingen "Improving social support for partners facing spousal cancer while caring for minors. A randomized controlled trial." ved Institutt for samfunnspsykologi, Universitetet i Bergen. Hun hadde fra tidligere en master i helsefag retning sykepleievitenskap og er utdannet psykiatrisk sykepleier. Hun har bred arbeidserfaring innen psykisk helsearbeid, med erfaring fra sikkerhetspsykiatri og mange års arbeid med psykososial oppfølging ved livskriser og overgrep.
